The Green Patrols assess the environmental pollution
Every fall first year students of the bachelor program of Environmental Science go on a Green Patrol. Its tasks are to survey the green territories of Riga city (parks, gardens, forests, water bodies etc.) and to map the pollution found in the surveyed territories. During the assignment students give their proposals for cleaning, upgrading and preventing the pollution in the territories. At the end the obtained results are presented to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, the Riga city council and other stakeholders.
The Green patrols are kind of a monitoring program during which the condition (and its changes) of the territory surveyed are assessed. Clean-up measures are taken basing on the results of the survey. The Green Patrols allow the responsible institutions to be updated on the situation.
In the Institute of Energy Systems and Environment the Green Patrols are being organized already the fifth year in a row. The Green Patrols are created on a basis of public initiative by cooperation of association "Pēdas LV", Riga Technical University and University of Latvia.
