Course outline
Introduction. Principles of elements of environmental management and management systems. (2 h)
International environmental management standards and registration schemes. (2 h)
Comparative analysis of environmental management systems at various levels (international, EU, national). (4 h)
Review and evaluation of Latvian environmental management instruments from the perspective of ISO 14001 requirements. (8 h)
Comparative analysis of environmental management of enterprises of various profiles, size and level of complexity. (12 h)
Analysis of the VASSI environmental system in accordance to the requirements of the international ISO 14001 standards. (4 h)
Identification and presentation of EMS implementation and certification of ecological and economic benefits. (4 h)
Report preparation and presentation of Latvia’s environmental management elements. (12 h)
Report development and implementation of EMS in enterprises of various profiles, size and level of complexity. (12 h)
VASSI environmental management system analysis and evaluation in accordance with the ISO 14001 requirements. (4 h)
Learning outcomes and assessment
To be able to compare environmental management models internationally, in Europe and Latvia. - Examination: Homework, exam, course work. Assessment criteria: Ability to identify the main principles and benefits of environmental management systems.
To be able to identify environmental management principles in various types of organizations. - Examination: Homework, practical work, exam, course work. Assessment criteria: Ability to determine and apply the elements of environmental management systems.
To be able to implement an environmental management system. - Examination: Homework, practical work, exam, course work. Assessment criteria: Draft an environmental report.
To be able to monitor an environmental management system. - Examination: Homework, practical work, exam, course work. Assessment criteria: Ability to identify preventative measures.

Abstract
The environmental management course is based on a comparative analysis of environmental management systems at different levels (international (ISO 14001), European (EMAS) and national). The analysis includes environmental policy, aspects, environmental programme and monitoring on the programme’s implementation.
Goals and objectives of the course
in terms of competences and skills
To acquire theoretical knowledge on the principles of environmental management and the instruments applied in the European Union, as well as on the national and organizational level. To acquire practical experience on the development and implementation of environmental management systems in different types of organizations.
Assignments
Literature research on the implementation of environmental management systems. Development and preparation of environmental reports in enterprises and organizations of varying profiles, size and levels of complexity.
