IESE together with „Sorosa fonds – Latvija” implemented a project "Life cycle assessment for biodiesel production in Latvia ".

Biodiesel is one of the renewable energy resources and is known in Latvia for saveral years, but it is not used enough (below 1 % of the total fuel consumption). One of the main reasons are stereotypes within the society about biodiesel production and its impact on environment and vehicles. It is predicted that till year 2020 biodiesel consumption in Latvia will rise up to 10% of total fuel consumption.

The aim of the project is to conduct Life cycle analysis of biodiesel production in Latvia and its impact on the environment and climate change in the future, to reach the obligation of EU renewable energy resource directive for Latvia: till 2020 40% of total energy resource consumption for energy production has te be renewables.
Within the project a conference will be held in which representatives of Ministries and goverment institutions, entepreneurs and other interested entities will get introduced with the results of the project.

Project activities include:
1. Data acquisition and analysis of biodiesel production in Latvia
2. LCA of biodiesel production in Latvia using SIMAPRO computer program.
3. Organizing the workshop on Environmental impact of biodiesel production.

Project leader is Dr.hab.sc.ing., prof. Dagnija Blumberga. Project participants are phd students Francesco Romagnoli and Jelena Pubule, Masters program students Dace Zahare, Zane Brice and Ieva Lorence and Bachelors program students Sofija Grinvalde and Vita Brovkina.

Presentations from the project workshop (.pdf documents):

1. LCA methodology and SIMAPRO

2. Rape cultivation

3. Production process of biodiesel

4. LCA model: Inventerization analysis

5. LCA model: Analysis of the research results
